Although it tastes naughty, this treat is nice to your body! Both filling and energizing, this smoothie will satisfy your afternoon craving for that tray of brownies or venti frappuccino. It’s gluten free, protein rich, and includes low-glycemic sugars that won’t give you that all too familiar sugar crash.
Recently, one of my favorite healthy add-ins for smoothies has been maca powder. Subtle in flavor, it adds a nice warmth and slightly sweet taste. Maca is a superfood and has benefits from helping with anxiety to increasing your libido ;) Paleo Mama has a list of additional benefits and some delicious recipes using this ingredient. The cacao and coconut flakes in the smoothie also add a slightly crunchy texture that’s quite pleasant while you’re sipping away. I must have really needed a sweet fix because I downed this smoothie about 5 seconds flat!
You’ll need: 8 oz plain almond milk 8 oz coffee (cooled) 2 tsp maca powder (I like the Navitas Naturals brand) 2 tsp cacao nibs 2 tbs almond butter 2 tbs coconut flakes 2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder 2 frozen bananas, sliced 4 ice cubes 2 pitted dates 2 scoops protein powder (I use Whole Foods vanilla whey protein powder)
Put all ingredients in a powerful blender (my KitchenAid has never let me down!) and blend until smooth, about 30 seconds. Divide among two glasses and, if desired, top with additional cacao nibs and coconut flakes.
